A newborn infant or baby may suffer a birth defect known as an abdominal hernia or an umbilical hernia.
An umbilical hernia or adjacent hernias named paraumbilical hernias sprout around the navel, or belly button, area, which is where the umbilicus is located at birth.
Sometimes vessels from the umbilical cord exit via a muscle in the abdominal wall. This congenital weakness is known as an umbilical hernia. Even after the umbilical cord has been removed, the gap or weakness in the abdominal muscle may remain. Its appearance is that of a bulge through the muscle, in or around the navel. In some cases this may be called an “outie” rather than an “innie” navel.
